Rakija and liqueurs are unique drinks whose origins are often attributed to the peoples of the Balkan region.
Rakija is a strong alcoholic beverage, a pure distillate of fermented fruit. This means that fermented fruit is placed into a still, and during the distillation process, alcohol (rakija) is extracted—most commonly with a strength of 40% to 60% ABV.
Rakija is pure (without any additives) and colorless. Travarica is rakija to which certain herbs or other ingredients are added.
Double-distilled rakija (prepečenica) is rakija that, after the first distillation, is returned to the still and distilled again, resulting in higher product quality.

Liqueurs are made from rakija or ethyl alcohol, mixed with sugar, fruit, or other aromatic ingredients. The term liqueur refers to flavored alcoholic beverages with a relatively high sugar content (minimum 100 grams) and an alcohol percentage ranging from 24% to 60%.
We distinguish:
Fruit liqueurs are produced using the infusion method, in which fruit is mixed with rakija or ethanol and sugar, which absorbs the aroma, taste, and color of the fruit.
Herbal liqueurs are produced by distillation or pressing, which makes them colorless, so leaves or herbs are added to achieve a specific aroma. Practically everything can be distilled – from seeds and leaves to roots – and these are also used as spices that provide aroma. Once the alcoholic base is flavored, sugar syrup and natural colorings are added, after which it is filtered and bottled, creating the magical Suza liqueur!
