How Mali Zmaj Became Laval Pelinkovac

A Laval Pelinkovac bottle symbolically emerging from the broken Mali Zmaj packaging, representing the visual transformation of the Suza brand.

A story of a new identity inspired by Count Laval Nugent and the Trsat Dragon

Every legend has its beginning, and ours starts with Mali Zmaj — a herbal liqueur creation that won over lovers of bitter spirits with its simplicity, aromatic depth, and strong character. But just as a dragon in mythology grows and gains power, Mali Zmaj eventually outgrew its skin. And that is how Laval was born.

Inspired by Count Laval Nugent, the protector of Trsat, and by the legendary Trsat Dragon guarding the history of the Kvarner region, Laval represents a new level of quality, identity, and experience. We kept the soul of Mali Zmaj — but gave it a new strength and a richer story.

Why “Laval”?

Count Laval Nugent (1777–1862) was an Irish aristocrat, Austrian field marshal, art collector, and patron who left a profound mark on Croatia, especially on Rijeka and its surroundings. As a major landowner, he owned Trsat, Bosiljevo, and Dubovac, participated in the restoration of Frankopan castles, and founded the first public museum in Croatia – the Nugent Museum.

He was:

  • the restorer of Trsat Castle
  • an art collector
  • a patron of culture
  • a man whose name still carries a unique energy in this region

His symbolism fits perfectly with the identity of a pelinkovac that has “grown up” beyond its early phase. Mali Zmaj evolved into something more sophisticated, richer, and more mature — just as Trsat itself evolved over centuries under the influence of Nugent’s legacy.

The Dragon Has Grown — Laval Is Born

Laval is not just a new look. It is a complete evolution:

  • a more modern flavor profile
  • a richer and deeper aroma
  • a premium label featuring the Trsat Dragon
  • a bold visual identity that bridges history and contemporary design

This transformation is symbolized by a visual in which Laval is “born” from the cracked shell of Mali Zmaj — a new beginning, the same essence, and greater strength.

Laval as a Cocktail Star

Laval is not only meant to be enjoyed neat. Thanks to the rich aroma of wormwood and carefully selected spices, it fits beautifully into modern cocktail culture.

It pairs perfectly with:

  • tonic water
  • ginger beer
  • citrus fruits
  • honey
  • spiced syrups
